How to Prepare for an Ideal Digital Marketing Job Interview

We get a lot of requirements for digital marketing, social media marketing from various organizations and every week we send each requirements to our alumni/current students. Here is an example of a requirement:

Job Description
The Digital Media Marketing will implement the company’s Social Media marketing. Administration includes content strategy, develop brand awareness, generate inbound traffic and cultivate leads and sales. The Social Media manager is a highly motivated individual with experience and a passion for designing and implementing the Company’s content strategy, creating relevant content, blogging, community participation and leadership.

Responsibilities:
     Growth of likes, Lead generation, Reach, Engagement, Sales.
     Great design
     Visual content has a lasting effect on us humans. Whether it’s your status updates, your landing pages or your Facebook ads, what the audience sees is what they’ll remember.
     Make sure it’s consistent, compelling and gets your point across.
     Solid Content Strategy
     What you post on your Social channels is the foundation for all your other Social Media marketing.
     Promotion Strategy
     You need to continually grow your fan base. Social advertising is a very valuable tool to get your message heard.
     Engagement Strategy
     Your Social Media manager should listen, x`x`respond, ask questions and engage with your audience.
     Conversion Strategy
     With growth and engagement strategies in place, the Social Media manager’s job is to convert fans/followers into customers.
Criteria of Selection
     Demonstrates creativity and documented immersion in Social Media. (Give links to profiles as examples).
     Proficient in content marketing theory and application. Experience sourcing and managing content development and publishing.
     Exhibits the ability to jump from the creative side of marketing to analytical side, able to demonstrate why their ideas are analytically sound.
     Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of Social Media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Google+Local, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios.
     Maintains excellent writing and language skills.
     Enjoys a working knowledge of the blogging ecosystem relevant to the Company’s field.
     Displays ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and video format.
     Exceeds at building and maintaining sales relationships, online and off.
     Is a Team player with the confidence to take the lead and guide other employees when necessary. (ie: content development, creation and editing of content, and online reputation management).
     Makes evident good technical understanding and can pick up new tools quickly.
So how to prepare for a job interview like this:

  1. Understanding the Job description:

The job description can tell a lot about the job and you can get some insights from a JD. Take some time understanding the requirement. Let me break it down for you.


“The Social Media manager is a highly motivated individual with experience and a passion for designing and implementing the Company’s content strategy, creating relevant content, blogging, community participation and leadership”

    What they look for is experience, if you have 3-5 years of experience in digital, social media this is good, however the employer will expect you to demonstrate that experience.
      Be prepared to show relevant experience, examples, statistics
  They would also like to know how you solved some of the customer’s problem
     Made some mistakes during the campaigns? Great you must have learned from the mistakes keep them handy
     How will you work under pressure,have you have any experience during a crisis situation. That comes handy too
     Highly motivated for designing. As I always say, creativity, basic designing skills are part of your job in 2017 a few years back design and technical skills are done by creative team and IT.
     Passion & Company’s content strategy Do not apply for the job if you don’t have a passion for content. Content includes writing blog post, Images, videos, animations, Infographics, ebooks, Ad copies, Facebook ad copies, descriptions and creative text for updates. Be prepared to show some of your content you created and the results. If you don’t have those skills,  this is the time to learn those skills. Good news! there are great apps today.

  Highly Motivated Individual: What they expect is for you to take initiatives. Instead of your boss telling you something, you take some small initiatives, take a step forward instead of just sharing ideas, give a detailed plan for executing those ideas. How to get things done. This is a great opportunity to become the go-to person in the organization.

2. Research the Company & Culture:
Any organization hiring you will want to know are you fit for their culture. After all you are going to be part of their culture. Understanding the company, culture that you are applying for will take you a long way. This JD is for Evening Flavors do your research looking at their websites, social channels, blogs. Here are few ideas:

       While you are doing some research if you notice something that can be improved such as page load time, design, suggestions, Take a note
       You can take a step forward and if you are going to handle their content and social media how would you go about? Prepare a digital/social/content plan. During the interview you can give the plan. An example of good research
       They have a newsletter and when you click on the newsletter, you can see the last newsletter was published Jan 2016. Before that they were publishing newsletter on a regular basis. If you are a digital marketer you should know the importance of email marketing and the power of collect leads through valuable content.
       In the about us section you get a sense of the people, the team. Learn more about the team, if you know the person who is interviewing you, check their social media profiles, get an idea of the person’s interest

Sample questions
       Why do you want to work for our company?
       Why do you like digital/social/content?

Where can you find the answers: Understand more about the company from about us section, any interview, videos by the top level management, their corporate blog will be a good place to research about the company. Company social media channels, events, images/videos will help understand the culture. Read the latest blog post, tweets, comments

3. Do you have the expertise?
Companies who are hiring like to know do you know your subject, have experience in that topic and how will you implement the knowledge for their company.

From the JD:

They expect you to be both “creative and analytically sound”
Be prepared
        Numbers, reasonings, scenario based answers  and case studies
       What social media tools you use? Why, how often?
       What metrics matters according to you and why?


“Is a Team player with the confidence to take the lead and guide other employees when necessary. (ie: content development, creation and editing of content, and online reputation management)”

Questions:
     Are you a good team player?
     Have you trained your team in the past? In what areas have you trained them? Do you have a reference.

Answers:
Team player: Do you have any awards, recognitions from your organization, how about in LinkedIn, what would others say about you. Have some comments for your blog post, videos. Get some screen shot. BTW, if you are a #digitalmarketer and don’t have a blog, Live video or no presence in social media channels, You are NOT a good fit. These are minimum requirement

Have resources in this ebook, Download it Now:  Step by step guide to become a modern marketer

Training: Give details about the training. For example, you hired an intern who has no knowledge about video editing, with your guidance and training he/she is able to shoot, edit, upload, optimize and get engagement/conversion through those videos. If you have a video, show it to them. How many conversions happened, how much time did you spend with this intern and how much time it took for the intern to learn and implement the skill.

“ Makes evident good technical understanding and can pick up new tools quickly”

Today you have to be technical if not it’s time to pick up some technical skills.
     SEO is getting technical, learn how to implement AMP in your website
     Do you know how to integrate custom conversion tracking to a website
     A/B testing, custom landing page for ads, Google tag manager are required for a digital marketer.
